Court to Decide on Protest Ban Ahead of President's Visit to Jaffna

The Jaffna Police have taken legal action ahead of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to Jaffna today (31), seeking an injunction to prohibit protests organized by Member of Parliament Ramanathan Archuna and a coalition of groups in the region.

A petition filed by the Police in the Jaffna Court on January 29 claims that the protests, planned by MP Archuna and other local organizations, pose a significant risk to public order and law enforcement during the President's visit. The petition specifically addresses potential disturbances in the Keisiyam area, which could disrupt the planned visit and cause a major disruption to public life.

The court has summoned individuals named in the petition, including MP Archuna, to appear before the court today (30) for further investigation and decision-making. The outcome of this petition could determine whether the planned protests will be allowed to proceed, as tensions rise in the region ahead of the President’s arrival.
