Political sources are buzzing with speculation about the appointment of Sri Lanka's next Air Force Commander, suggesting that the position may bypass the highly qualified Chief of Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Wickramaratne, in favor of a close ally of the National People's Power (NPP)
Air Vice Marshal Wickramaratne, who is widely regarded for his service during Sri Lanka’s war efforts, is the next highest-ranking officer in the Air Force and fully meets all the criteria to assume the role of Commander. He played a pivotal role in ending the war, notably through leading air strikes that contributed to the downfall of LTTE leader Tamil Chelvan.
Joining the Sri Lanka Air Force in 1989 as a General Duty Cadet Officer in the Pilot Branch, Wickramaratne has since built an illustrious career. A seasoned pilot and flight instructor, he’s undergone extensive training in countries like Pakistan, Israel, China, India, and Ecuador. His previous roles include Director General of Air Operations and Diplomatic Secretary at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he strengthened military ties between Sri Lanka and the U.S.
In addition to his impressive military resume, Wickramaratne has been recognized with multiple honors, including the Shura Medal (awarded six times) and the Utthama Seva Medal for his exceptional service. His leadership also extended to commanding both No. 05 and No. 10 Fighter Squadrons, equipped with multi-role fighter jets, from 2012 to 2014.
However, the potential for a new Commander—someone with strong ties to the National People’s Army—has stirred controversy, as many believe Wickramaratne’s exceptional record and long service should guarantee him the position. The situation raises questions about political influence in Sri Lanka’s military appointments and the potential ramifications for the Air Force’s future leadership.
