The Public Utilities Commission has published its final report on the revision of electricity tariffs. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) had submitted a proposal suggesting that electricity tariffs should remain unchanged for the next six months without any revision. However, the Public Utilities Commission submitted a counter-proposal.
The Commission has provided an opportunity for public opinion on the proposed tariff revision and has decided that electricity tariffs should be reduced by 20%.
The decision by the Public Utilities Commission to reject the CEB's proposal, which aimed to delay the tariff revision and reduce the volume of the reduction based on false claims, highlights the critical role of independent commissions in a country like Sri Lanka.
