COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – January 20, 2025 – Tilvin Silva, General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), underscored the critical need for success in the forthcoming Local Government elections scheduled for April 2025 to advance the government's transformative agenda.
Addressing a gathering in Colombo, Silva highlighted the government's commitment to both physical and moral reforms across the nation. He acknowledged the challenges inherent in such an ambitious endeavor but expressed confidence, citing the five-year mandate granted by the populace as ample time to implement meaningful change.
Silva detailed several achievements within the government's initial months, including:
Economic Stabilization: Strengthening the economy and maintaining the exchange rate below Rs. 300 per U.S. dollar.
Public Welfare Enhancements: Increasing pensions by Rs. 3,000, augmenting the Aswesuma allowance, providing Rs. 6,000 to schoolchildren for stationery purchases, and reducing electricity tariffs.
Fiscal Responsibility: Curtailing wasteful expenditure, exemplified by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's lean delegation of seven to eight members during his official visit to China.
He emphasized the government's dedication to combating fraud and corruption, noting resistance from those benefiting from such malpractices. Silva urged the public not to be swayed by opposition criticisms, reaffirming the administration's resolve to persevere in its reformative efforts.
The upcoming Local Government elections are poised to serve as a barometer for public support of the government's initiatives, with Silva advocating for a strong electoral mandate to sustain and expand the current trajectory of national development.
