MPs' New Vehicle Allocation Contradicts Government's Cost-Cutting Measures

Dharmapriya Dissanayake, a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Kurunegala District for the National People’s Power (NPP), announced that all MPs will soon receive new vehicles to assist in their official duties. During a visit to the North Western Province Mechanical and Equipment Authority in Kurunegala, Dissanayake emphasized the necessity of vehicles for ministers and MPs to effectively perform their responsibilities.

He stated, "We expect all MPs to receive new vehicles. To date, MPs have not been allocated any official vehicles. An agreement has been reached to provide vehicles to MPs. While the specific model has not been decided yet, the vehicles will certainly be new and are expected to arrive within the next couple of months."

This development follows a previous announcement by the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs in November 2024, stating that MPs would be provided with fuel-efficient vehicles instead of luxury ones, aiming to minimize public fund wastage.

The decision to provide new vehicles to MPs comes amid ongoing discussions about reducing parliamentary costs and limiting MPs' benefits. In November 2024, the government formed a committee to overhaul MP benefits, including scaling back vehicle provisions, pensions, housing allowances, and other financial perks.

The allocation of new vehicles to MPs has sparked public debate, with some questioning the necessity of such provisions given the country's economic challenges. Critics argue that the funds could be better utilized for public welfare initiatives.

As the vehicles are expected to arrive within the next couple of months, the public will be keenly observing how this decision aligns with the government's commitment to fiscal responsibility and public service.
