NPP Faces Setbacks in Local Co-operative Elections

In recent co-operative society elections, the ruling National People's Power (NPP) party has experienced notable defeats in certain regions. In the Kelaniya Co-operative Society, a group supported by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) secured 99 seats on the management board, while the NPP-backed group obtained only 32 seats. A similar outcome occurred in the Angunakolapellessa Society in the Hambantota District, where an independent group, reportedly supported by the SJB, won the majority of seats.

These results have prompted discussions about the NPP's influence at the grassroots level, especially considering their recent national successes. The NPP had previously achieved a historic victory in the November 2024 parliamentary elections, securing a two-thirds majority with 159 out of 225 seats.

Analysts suggest that these co-operative society election outcomes may indicate a need for the NPP to strengthen its local engagement strategies to maintain support across all levels of governance.
