Former Prison Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa Honored by Minister of Justice Amid Controversy

Former Prison Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa has recently received an award for his 37 years of service to the Prisons Department during a ceremony organized by the department. The event, titled “Night of Honours,” saw the Minister of Justice from the National People's Power Government, Harshana Nanayakkara, presenting Lamahewa with the accolade in recognition of his dedication and contributions to the sector. However, this recognition has reignited a social media debate, given Lamahewa's controversial past.

Lamahewa's name became synonymous with controversy following the infamous Welikada Prison massacre in 2012. The incident, which claimed the lives of 27 inmates, is regarded as one of the darkest chapters in Sri Lanka’s history. Lamahewa, along with other officials, was accused of involvement in the killings, with allegations suggesting he had prior knowledge of and aided the events.

The Colombo High Court found Lamahewa guilty in January 2022, sentencing him to death for his role in the massacre. However, on August 8, 2024, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka overturned the verdict, citing insufficient evidence, limited witness testimony, and procedural flaws during the original trial. Lamahewa's acquittal marked a significant turning point in the legal proceedings and sparked mixed reactions among the public.

His connections with influential political figures, particularly the Rajapaksa family, have added to the controversy surrounding his career. The Welikada massacre has been a recurring subject of public discourse, with journalist Kasun Pussewela even authoring a book on the incident.

The recent award has intensified debates, with critics questioning the appropriateness of honoring a figure linked to such a contentious past. Supporters, however, argue that the recognition reflects Lamahewa’s long service and dedication, independent of the legal challenges he has faced.

The Prisons Department's decision to celebrate Lamahewa's contributions, coupled with his acquittal by the Supreme Court, has once again placed him at the center of public attention, highlighting the enduring complexities of justice, accountability, and recognition in Sri Lanka.
