Lake House Chairman Sparks Unrest with Deputy Editor's Dismissal

Sumudu Chathurani Jayawardena, the Deputy Editor of Lake House's Silumina newspaper, has been abruptly removed from her position and reassigned to the training department. Jayawardena, a respected journalist, writer, and television host, was appointed to her role after earning the highest marks in an interview. Her dismissal has shocked many, including the editorial director and the Silumina editor-in-chief, who have expressed their displeasure.

However, the chairman reportedly claimed the decision was made following "orders from above." This incident has further fueled unrest within Lake House, where employees and trade unions are voicing their dissatisfaction with the actions of the new chairman, Gamini Varushamana.

Upon assuming office on January 2nd, Varushamana gave a speech that employees describe as threatening and authoritarian. He stated, "I will hire those I want. Those who can’t, can leave. The game is the game," and warned employees against opposing him.

Reports indicate that the chairman has been making arbitrary changes to editorial positions, disregarding established processes and the authority of the editorial board director and chief editors. Varushamana is allegedly restructuring the organization to appoint friends to key positions, dismissing those he deems unsuitable.

The chairman's actions have caused widespread concern among the board of directors and staff members at Lake House. All trade unions have come together to oppose his decisions. Employees suspect that Gamini Varushamana is using his new position as chairman to address personal grievances or unresolved issues from his earlier tenure at the company. This has led to considerable tension and unrest within the organization.
