IPPBA Warns of Nationwide Bus Strike Over Key Issues

The Inter-Provincial Private Bus Association (IPPBA) has announced plans for a countrywide bus strike if Transport Ministry officials fail to hold discussions today to address pressing concerns.

IPPBA President Sarath Vijitha Kumara told the Daily Mirror that the association opposes the government's recent move to deploy plainclothes police officers to monitor public transport buses for road rule violations.

He accused the police of applying undue pressure on private bus operators through special operations targeting passenger buses. Although these operations aim to enhance passenger safety, many road accidents reportedly involve private buses, according to the association.

Kumara also highlighted critical infrastructure shortcomings, stating that inadequate road systems contribute to frequent traffic violations. He emphasized the lack of designated bus parking areas, sanitary facilities, and restrooms for drivers as additional challenges faced by the industry.

“We need a discussion with Transport Ministry officials before this Wednesday,” Kumara said, warning of potential disruptions if their grievances remain unaddressed.
