Objective Science Reporting Programme Launched in Colombo to Promote Factual Science Journalism


The Objective Science Reporting Programme (OSR) was officially launched today at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, marking a significant milestone in improving science literacy and factual journalism in the country.

The programme is a collaborative effort between the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Health and Mass Media.

The inauguration was held under the patronage of Minister of Science and Technology, Hon. Dr. Krishantha Abeysena, who stressed the importance of delivering verified scientific information to the public.

Key officials present included:

  • Prof. Saman Seneweera, Chairman of the NSF
  • Dr. Sepalika Sudasinghe, Director General of the NSF
  • Ms. W.P. Sewwandi, Director (Development) of the Ministry of Mass Media
  • Dr. Shantha Siri, Additional Director of the NSF
  • Dr. Jayantha Wattavidanage
  • Prof. Chandana Jayaratne
  • Prof. Jeewantha Premaratne

along with university vice-chancellors, lecturers, researchers, and representatives of OSR partner institutions.

Heads of media organizations and journalists from both print and electronic media also participated, highlighting the cross-sector collaboration behind the initiative.

The Objective Science Reporting Programme seeks to empower media professionals to deliver accurate, research-based news on scientific advancements, discoveries, and health developments. By encouraging high-quality science communication, the programme aims to boost public science awareness in Sri Lanka and support evidence-based decision-making among citizens.
