As the Sinhala and Tamil New Year approaches, food prices in Sri Lanka are on the rise, with notable increases in the cost of chicken, eggs, and fish, traders say.
According to market sources, the price of a single egg has climbed to Rs. 39–40, while the cost of a kilogram of chicken now ranges between Rs. 1,100 and Rs. 1,200. These increases are largely driven by heightened demand during the festive season and a limited supply of poultry products.
Meanwhile, the Peliyagoda Fish Market has also reported price hikes. For example, Kelawalla (Yellowfin Tuna) has risen from Rs. 1,300 to Rs. 1,500 per kg between April 7 and April 8, 2025, due to reduced catch from key coastal regions.
Consumers are encouraged to stay updated on food price trends in Sri Lanka during this festive period to make informed purchasing decisions.
