Mervyn Silva Remanded: A Genuine Anti-Corruption Drive or Selective Action?

In a significant move against corruption, former Minister Mervyn Silva was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at his Battaramulla residence on March 6, 2025.

This arrest stems from allegations of preparing forged documents to facilitate the sale of government-owned land to a private entity. Subsequently, the Mahara Magistrate's Court ordered that Silva and two associates be remanded until March 17, 2025.

This development has been perceived by many as the government's inaugural step in a broader campaign to hold corrupt officials accountable. However, concerns persist regarding the consistency of this initiative. Notably, there has been no official statement on the potential arrest of Consumer Affairs Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, who faces similar allegations. Additionally, figures such as Tiran Alles, accused of significant corruption, and Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, who has been widely criticized for both corruption and abuse of power, have yet to be apprehended.

The arrest of Mervyn Silva, a controversial figure in Sri Lankan politics, marks a pivotal moment in the nation's anti-corruption efforts. The public now awaits further actions to determine if this signifies a genuine commitment to eradicating corruption or merely an isolated incident.
