In a letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the BASL stressed the importance of protecting the independence of the Attorney General’s Department. While acknowledging that the AG is accountable to the public, the association emphasized that prosecutorial decisions must be based solely on evidence and legal admissibility.
The BASL warned that political interference in such decisions could severely compromise the AG’s independence and undermine the rule of law. It reminded the President that the Supreme Court has affirmed that the AG’s decisions can be challenged through judicial processes, including writ applications and fundamental rights jurisdiction.
Furthermore, the BASL urged the President to uphold the independence of key legal institutions, emphasizing that judicial and quasi-judicial decisions may not always align with public sentiment but must be made in accordance with established legal principles.
The BASL’s concerns highlight the importance of safeguarding the integrity of Sri Lanka’s justice system amid growing scrutiny and public interest in the Lasantha Wickrematunge case.
