Attorney General Recommends Release of Three Accused in Lasantha Wickramatunga Murder Case

Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe has advised the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to release three suspects involved in the murder of veteran journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga.

The three accused—Prem Ananda Udalagama, Hettiaraachchige Don Tissasiri Sugathapala, and Vitarana Arachchige Prasanna Nanayakkara—are set to be released as the Attorney General’s Department has decided not to proceed with further legal action against them.

The Attorney General’s directive, issued on January 27, 2025, was subsequently reported to the Magistrate’s Court. The court has been informed of the decision and the steps taken regarding the matter.

This development marks a significant turning point in the long-standing investigation into the murder of Lasantha Wickramatunga, a prominent journalist known for his fearless reporting.
