Ahimsa Wickrematunge Urges Prime Minister to Impeach Attorney General Over Alleged Misconduct

Ahimsa Wickrematunge, daughter of slain journalist and Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickrematunge, has called on Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to initiate impeachment proceedings against Attorney General (AG) Parinda Ranasinghe, accusing him of gross abuse of power and neglect of duty.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Ahimsa expressed deep concern over the recent decision by the Attorney General to discharge three individuals previously named as suspects in the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court Case No. B 92/2009, related to the investigation into her father’s assassination.

"I write with grave concern about the action taken last week by the Attorney General... I fear that the government believes that applying pressure on Mr. Ranasinghe to reverse his decision will be a sufficient solution," Ahimsa stated. She commended the government for its swift response in reviewing the AG’s decision but stressed that the only way to uphold the promise of justice is to impeach the Attorney General in Parliament and remove him from office.

The Attorney General’s Department, however, clarified that the AG’s legal opinion was not connected to the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge. Instead, it pertained to the case involving the abduction of his driver and the disappearance of a crucial field notebook.

Ahimsa’s letter highlights the broader concerns regarding the independence and integrity of Sri Lanka’s judicial system, urging decisive action to restore public confidence in the country’s justice process.
