Sri Lanka's Cabinet Approves MoUs to Enhance Media Collaboration with China

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening cooperation between Sri Lankan and Chinese media institutions. The proposals, submitted by Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, received Cabinet approval on January 7, 2025.

The approved MoUs include:

  • An agreement between the Ministry of Health and Mass Media and China's National Radio and Television Administration.

  • Two separate agreements between Lake House (Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited) and the Department of Government Information with China's Xinhua News Agency.

  • An agreement between the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and China Media Group.

  • An agreement between the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and China Media Group.

These MoUs are designed to foster collaboration in the health, media, and information sectors between Sri Lanka and China. Minister Jayatissa emphasized that these agreements aim to enhance the exchange of information and technical expertise, thereby strengthening the existing ties between the two nations.

In addition to these agreements, the Cabinet reaffirmed Sri Lanka's commitment to the "One China Policy," underscoring the country's support for China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

These developments come ahead of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's scheduled visit to China from January 14 to 17, 2025, which is expected to further bolster bilateral relations.

The approved MoUs are anticipated to facilitate greater cooperation in content sharing, joint productions, and capacity building between Sri Lankan and Chinese media organizations, contributing to a more robust partnership in the media landscape.
