In an official statement, Sri Lanka Customs explained that the 323 containers were released by a specially appointed Screening Unit on 18 July 2024. This unit was established following recommendations from a Cabinet-appointed committee tasked with resolving the persistent container traffic congestion at the Colombo port. The decision to release the containers was made in accordance with criteria set by the committee and endorsed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Committee Chair Minister Bimal Ratnayake on 12 January 2025.
The statement emphasized that the release of the containers was conducted transparently and in line with established procedures, ensuring that no illegal items such as weapons, gold, or narcotics could enter the country. Additionally, the Customs Department assured that there were no losses in customs duties during the process.
The initiative reportedly helped alleviate port congestion significantly, enabling numerous importers to clear their goods swiftly and at reduced costs. However, the release of the containers sparked political controversy, with both the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) accusing Governor Yusoof of facilitating the clearance of containers without proper inspection.
Governor Yusoof, in a press briefing, categorically denied any involvement with the containers in question. “These containers do not belong to me or to the company I founded. These are baseless accusations aimed at tarnishing my reputation,” he stated.
Sri Lanka Customs further clarified that none of the released containers were imported on behalf of Expolanka Holdings Limited, reiterating that the process was conducted with integrity and in the national interest.
The controversy has sparked a heated debate in political circles, with opposition parties demanding a thorough investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the Customs Department has urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid speculation, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability in its operations.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders await further clarity on the matter, while the government continues its efforts to streamline port operations and ensure the efficient movement of goods through Colombo, a key hub for regional trade.
