Former Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and his wife have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on charges of criminal misappropriation of public funds and violating the Public Property Act.
The arrest was made following instructions from the Attorney General. The charges relate to the alleged misuse of Rs. 6,146,110 received from the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation in 2014. The funds were reportedly allocated for providing relief to flood victims in the Bingiriya and Narammala areas but were instead used for campaign activities during the 2015 Presidential Election.
Both suspects were produced before the Colombo Magistrate's Court today (January 23). Police Media Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manatunga confirmed that the arrests were carried out by the CID yesterday afternoon (January 22).
The CID is conducting further investigations into the allegations, which include the misuse of public funds in violation of the Public Property Act.
