Former Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga Arrested Over Alleged Assault

Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga, has been arrested by the Mirihana Police over allegations of assaulting a neighbor.

The arrest followed a complaint lodged with the Mirihana Police on January 9, 2025. After conducting investigations into the complaint, authorities took Weeratunga into custody this morning.

Weeratunga is scheduled to be produced before the court today.

Weeratunga, a cousin of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, previously served as Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Russia from 2006 to 2015.

This recent arrest adds to the series of legal challenges faced by Weeratunga in recent years.
