Corruption or Conspiracy? S.M. Ranjith Fights Back Against High Court Ruling

Former North Central Province Chief Minister S.M. Ranjith Samarakoon has filed an appeal challenging a recent High Court judgment related to corruption charges against him. The Bribery Commission had previously filed indictments against Samarakoon and his private secretary, Shanthi Chandrasena, alleging that between September 27, 2012, and December 31, 2014, they caused an unlawful loss to the government by misappropriating fuel allowances.

In January 2022, the Colombo High Court rejected preliminary objections from both defendants, allowing the trial to proceed. Subsequently, indictments were served in October 2022, formally charging them with corruption for allegedly persuading government officials to obtain Rs. 5,379,629 as fuel allowances during Samarakoon's tenure as Chief Minister.

The appeal seeks to overturn the High Court's decision, with Samarakoon's legal team arguing that the judgment was flawed. They are requesting a review of the evidence and legal interpretations that led to the initial ruling. The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for Samarakoon's political career and the broader discourse on accountability within Sri Lanka's public service.
