Tiran Alles' Political Influence Suspected in Delay of Arrests for Deshabandu Tennakoon and Others

Despite warrants issued by the Matara Magistrate's Court on February 28 to arrest 8 police officers, including former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, no action has been taken by the police in the past five days. The arrest warrants stem from their involvement in the attack on the Weligama Hotel, an incident linked to a land dispute between the son of former Governor Muzammil and former Police Minister Tiran Alles.

Investigative journalist Sri Lal Priyantha, in a recent discussion on his Ethala News YouTube channel, expressed concern over the police's lack of interest in making the arrests. He suggested that the delay may be due to higher-level instructions, emphasizing that arresting the IGP could attract international attention, which the authorities want to avoid. Priyantha also noted that the police seem reluctant to act against a high-ranking officer like the IGP, fearing potential social unrest.

While warrants have also been issued for 7 other police officers, none have been arrested yet. Priyantha raised questions as to why these officers have not been detained, especially since some are suspected of being involved in the Weligama attack. He further hinted at possible political interference, with allegations that former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles' influence may be contributing to the delays.

Adding to the complexity, Assistant Superintendent of Police Neville de Silva, accused of pressuring the Weligama Police OIC to alter official records, has filed a petition with the Court of Appeal to prevent his arrest, which signals further resistance to the operation.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about political influence in law enforcement and delays in justice, which could result in criminals evading punishment. Priyantha emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for the Easter bombing accountable, asserting that anyone complicit, even in a minor capacity, should face the maximum penalty under the law.
