The Supreme Court has issued a show cause notice to former President Maithripala Sirisena regarding his alleged failure to pay the full compensation ordered for the victims of the Royal Park murder case. The notice comes amid concerns that the compensation amount, mandated by the court, has not been settled as required.
However, in response to the court’s inquiry, Sirisena maintained that he has already fulfilled his legal obligations. Addressing the court, he stated, “I have paid the required compensation to the victims of the Royal Park case.”
The Royal Park murder case dates back to 2005 when Jude Shramantha Jayamaha was convicted for the brutal killing of Yvonne Johnson at the Royal Park condominium in Rajagiriya. In 2022, the Supreme Court ordered Sirisena and several others to pay compensation to the victim’s family due to failures in handling the presidential pardon granted to Jayamaha during Sirisena’s tenure as President.
The court is now set to review the matter further, with Sirisena expected to provide proof of payment or further clarification regarding the compensation.
