Government Tackles Extremist Ideologies in Eastern Province, Increasing Surveillance

The Sri Lankan Government is intensifying efforts to combat the spread of extremist ideologies, particularly within the Muslim population in the Eastern Province. Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala confirmed that intelligence reports from the State Intelligence Service (SIS) and military intelligence revealed attempts to radicalize individuals, especially children, through extremist teachings.

Reports indicate that these ideologies, which contradict the core teachings of Islam, are most prominently observed in the Kalmunai area. As a result, authorities have ramped up surveillance of religious institutions, with a focus on preventing the spread of extremism and racism in the country.

Minister Wijepala emphasized the Government's commitment to addressing such issues before they escalate, stating, "We will not allow the spread of extremism and racism in the country again. We will take measures to nip such issues in the bud."

In related developments, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake provided an update in Parliament regarding security measures taken last year following intelligence reports of possible attacks on tourists in the Arugam Bay area. Six individuals were arrested, and subsequent investigations revealed no credible threats, leading to the US Embassy lifting its travel advisory on the area.

The Sri Lankan Government has pledged to continue handling such intelligence matters professionally to ensure the safety of its citizens and visitors.
