Contradictory Reports on National Security: Intelligence Warns of Threats to President's Safety

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake recently assured that there were no threats to national security while speaking to the media during his visit to the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, where he also met with the Mahanayake Theras of Malwathu and Asgiri chapters. However, shortly after his statement, reports emerged contradicting this claim.

According to a report by Mawbima, state intelligence agencies have identified potential threats to the President’s security, particularly during his interactions with the public. It is reported that intelligence officials have briefed the President regarding these concerns.

The increasing presence of underworld activities and the suspicion of external influences behind such operations have led security forces to intensify their investigations. Intelligence agencies are actively monitoring and probing the individuals and groups potentially orchestrating these criminal activities.

President Dissanayake has been notably different from his predecessors in his approach to public engagement. He has frequently attended gatherings and interacted closely with citizens, fostering a direct connection with the people. However, some security experts and critics have expressed concerns that such an approach may not be ideal for ensuring his safety.

While the President and his administration maintain that national security remains intact, various stakeholders argue that ensuring the President’s safety requires stronger security measures. As a result, security agencies have reportedly advised the President to limit his direct public engagements to mitigate potential risks.
