Gampola Vidanalage Samantha Kumara, known as "Wele Suda," along with his wife and another woman, have been sentenced to eight years of rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court. High Court Judge Aditya Patabendige delivered the verdict after a comprehensive trial.
In addition to the prison sentences, the court has ordered the confiscation of properties, money, and gold items acquired illegally. The trio was convicted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act for amassing assets worth crores of rupees through heroin trafficking.
Wele Suda has a notorious history in Sri Lanka's drug trade. In 2015, he was sentenced to death for possessing 7.05 grams of heroin. He was arrested in Pakistan and extradited to Sri Lanka in January 2015. During investigations, he revealed connections with prominent individuals, including politicians and law enforcement officers.
This recent sentencing underscores Sri Lanka's ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and related financial crimes. The authorities continue to pursue legal action against individuals involved in the narcotics trade, aiming to dismantle these networks and confiscate illicitly obtained assets.
