Sri Lankan Government MP Denied UK Visa for AI Security Workshop

Several parliamentarians from Sri Lanka and other Commonwealth nations were invited to the "AI in Security Workshop" organized by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in the United Kingdom. This prestigious event, held at Westminster Parliament from January 27th, aimed to discuss the role of artificial intelligence in national security.

Sri Lanka was allocated two seats—one for the ruling party and one for the opposition. The opposition nominated Matara District MP Chathuraya Galappaththi, a computer engineer, while the ruling party selected an MP from Kandy District. The entire cost, including travel expenses, was covered by the British Parliament.

However, controversy arose when the government MP failed to secure a visa, despite holding a diplomatic passport. While the exact reason remains unclear, speculation suggests either a lack of necessary qualifications or a poorly prepared visa application. This has resulted in the waste of a valuable opportunity for a Sri Lankan representative at a globally significant forum.

Critics have pointed out that the Kandy District MP’s credentials remain undisclosed, even on the Sri Lankan Parliament’s official website. Questions are now being raised about the ruling party’s selection process, with concerns that the MP was chosen based on political considerations rather than merit.

This incident also highlights the importance of ensuring qualified representation for such international engagements. With 159 MPs from the ruling coalition, was there truly no better-suited candidate to represent Sri Lanka at a crucial AI and security conference?
