Jaffna District Member of Parliament (MP) Archchuna Ramanathan is under investigation after reportedly engaging in an altercation with police officers on traffic duty in Rambewa, Anuradhapura. The incident occurred while the MP was traveling to Colombo for a Parliament session yesterday.
According to police reports, MP Ramanathan’s vehicle was stopped for driving in a manner that obstructed other traffic while using VIP lights. When officers requested the MP's identity card, he allegedly refused to comply and behaved disruptively.
In a video circulating on social media, the MP can be heard questioning the officers, stating, “Are we not VIP? I should be allowed to travel to Parliament like the President and Prime Minister.”
Police spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manathunga confirmed that legal action will be taken against the MP for violating traffic laws and interfering with police duties. He added that the matter will be presented in court.
Additionally, authorities have launched an investigation to determine if the MP made any statements during the altercation that could incite religious disharmony.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the misuse of privileges by public officials, with Sri Lanka Police reiterating their commitment to enforcing traffic laws uniformly, regardless of status.
